SASQUATCH (2021) Season 1, Episode 1 of 3

I’ve never been much of a believer in Sasquatch. I’ve always categorized it with the Lochness Monster as far as mythic beings go. There’s an astounding amount of evidence that says that Nessy doesn’t exist, so why should Bigfoot? Even if he/she was a real thing, why would it still be alive to this day?

Directed by Joshua Rofe and produced by the Duplass Brothers, the first episode of the Hulu docuseries shows us the tip of the iceberg in regards to Sasquatch, with a secondhand story of investigative journalist David Holthouse through Drew Christie’s brilliantly animated storytelling. This is the origin of Holthouse’s fascination with the creature and his desire to find out the truth, by interviewing numerous “Sasquatch Hunters,” marijuana farmers, and people that believe they have encountered Sasquatch at one time. It’s all very interesting, but considering this is the first episode in a three episode limited series, the stories from the mouths of each individual feel remarkably the same, leading to a repetitive nature to the show almost instantly once the interviews begin.

Hulu’s Sasquatch is under an hour, so it’s not taking too much of your time for those curious about the mysterious being. It instantly grabs your attention with the base story and the clever use of animation, but then we dive into the interviews, which cause the middle to lose some steam only to conclude with a bang. Will this “bang” of an ending lead us to watch more of this series? Most likely, but if it’s the same conversation being relayed over and over, we might have to dip out before it can officially conclude the investigation.
