BOTTOMS SYNOPSIS:

Two unpopular queer high-school students start a fight club to have sex before graduation.

In this refreshingly unique comedy directed by Emma Seligman (Shiva Baby), two girls, PJ (Rachel Sennott, Saturday Night) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri, TV's The Bear), start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. And their bizarre plan works! The fight club gains traction, and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. But PJ and Josie find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.

OUR FILM REVIEW

Bottoms is a remarkable comedy, directed by Shiva Baby filmmaker Emma Seligman - Bottoms is an absurdist comedy that tackles a type of bizarre comedy that falls into its own category of humor. In fact the original time I saw the film… I didn’t understand the hype it was receiving. I then proceeded to see it again in the theater because I was bored one day and four more times after that… it’s safe to say I’m a fan. 

Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri are absolutely wonderful together, they pull off one another so easily that it’s easy to see why they so easily make the humor work through their connection. The supporting cast is just as wonderful with Ruby Cruz (Mare of Easttown), Kaia Gerber (Saturday Night), Havana Rose Liu (Afraid), Nicholas Galitizene (The Idea of You), Miles Fowler (Nobody Wants This) and Marshawn Lynch (Love Hurts). It’s really the accumulation of all these terrific actors that make this experience so special. 

The film released back in the late of Summer of 2023 and Kino Lorber is the first to get this out of physical media purgatory. The Blu-ray release looks just as good as it did on the big screen back in 2023, there’s a novelty to have the physical thing in your collection - especially with streaming service so casually removing them from existence. Charlie XCX’s score really pops in this release and while a 4K upgrade could’ve really punched up the notes - her score is still just as invigorating as it ever was. 

Loaded with special features, including an audio commentary with five of the leading cast and another with the director Emma Seligman - this is a release any fan of Bottoms will want to get their hands on.
