BRING IT ON SYNOPSIS:
A champion high school cheerleading squad discovers its previous captain stole all their best routines from an inner-city school and must scramble to compete at this year's championships.
'SMART AND SASSY!' – Los Angeles Times
Bring It On is the ultimate cheerleading movie, starring Kirsten Dunst, Gabrielle Union, and Eliza Dushku. The Toro cheerleading squad has spirit, spunk, sass, and a killer routine that's sure to land them the national championship trophy for the sixth year in a row. For newly elected team captain, Torrance (Dunst), the Toro's road to cheer glory stumbles when she discovers their perfectly choreographed routines were stolen from a hot hip-hop squad from across town. Now the squad must scramble to find a new routine to compete in this year's competition.
OUR FILM REVIEW
Bring It On is a film that always passed me by, I was always aware of its popularity (and many sequels), but up until a few years ago I had never sat down to watch it from start to finish. On a whim, I bought the Blu-ray and now can see the real differences Shout has made with their latest 4K offering. The film itself taps into powerful themes of race, privilege and inclusivity - all bundled together in a cheertastic comedy.
Sitting at a nearly even 65% Tomatometer to a 66% Popcornmeter, Bring It On may not have the highest marks when it comes to breaking formulaic trends, but it’s certainly earned a place in the heart of pop culture through its 25 years of existence. From its distinct sense of humor to its colorful cast of characters - nothing will ever beat a team of cheerleaders doing spirit fingers with so much passion behind each finger. While not everything has aged the best, there is a sense of nostalgia for comedy of this era and Bring It On falls into that category. Apart from Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man trilogy, Bring It On is what put Kirsten Dunst on the map for a lot of millennials… this is her M-O-V-I-E.
Shout Factory earns a spot at the top of the pyramid with picture quality that is crisp and thin with its grain layer, providing a 4K transfer that was approved by Ant-Man director Peyton Reed. Place the DVD against the Blu-ray against the 4K UHD and there’s in competition which one you’ll have the best experience with. The black levels are better than ever - appropriately level with the picture. The bright, colorful nature of the cheer on display pops and is as vibrant as ever. Just keep in mind that it is a movie filmed in the late 90s, so there is some natural age that 25 years naturally does to anything.
On the audio side of things, under English DTS-HD MA 5.1, English DTS-HD MA 2.0 Stereo, the mix appears to be the same as it was on the 2014 Blu-ray release. Luckily, the Blu-ray has clear sound quality that didn’t need much improvement so it’s easy to see why it might not sound any different to the ear.
The 25th Anniversary release unfortunately doesn’t add any new features to the extras here, in fact removing a few minor ones from previous releases. Still you’ll have enough to tide you over and more than enough of a reason to upgrade for the picture improvements alone. Fans of Bring It On should be delighted by this newest edition and this is a fantastic way to start if you haven’t had the opportunity to see the film yet.
