DEEPSTAR SIX SYNOPSIS:
A team of navy personnel stationed at a temporary base at the bottom of the ocean and tasked with setting up nuclear missiles discovers a huge underwater cavern which houses a giant prehistoric creature.
NOT ALL ALIENS COME FROM SPACE! From producer/director Sean S. Cunningham, the creator of the Friday the 13th and House films, comes this action-packed underwater sci-fi thriller starring Taurean Blacque (Hill Street Blues), Nancy Everhard (The Punisher), Greg Evigan (B.J. and the Bear), Miguel Ferrer (RoboCop), Matt McCoy (The Hand That Rocks the Cradle), Nia Peeples (North Shore), Cindy Pickett (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and Marius Weyers (The Gods Must Be Crazy).
Far below the surface of the unforgiving sea, the daring crew of DeepStar Six are explorers in a forbidding world of impenetrable darkness and unimaginable pressure. They have invaded the icy fathoms into which no human has ever ventured. Their mission is to establish a top secret Navy base on the ocean floor. But something’s down there and the crew of DeepStar Six are about to make a startling discovery—there’s no escape from the terror of the deep. DeepStar Six will plunge you into the depths of fear… save your last breath... to scream.
OUR FILM REVIEW
Deepstar Six has me at “The Creator of Friday the 13th”, that’s all I knew about the film when I asked for it and this film was more than I bargained for. Upon research this is a negatively received, box office whimper that was buried with the cluster of other titles like it from the 80s and onward.
The effects considering this movie was made with less than 9 million dollars are incredibly impressive - a horror film taking place on the sea floor with that little of a budget is a phenomenal feat. It’s a creature feature at heart and Cunningham does a great job of not over showing when he doesn’t have to. There’s not a lot here that the director does wrong, it’s as effective as the script allows and the budget promises… it’s just not anything revolutionary for the time.
The upgrade comes from a brand new HDR/Dolby Vision Master by StudioCanal - from a 4K Scan of the 35mm original camera negative. The sound performance also gets a lift this release offering 5.1 surround and lossless 2.0 audio.
Filled with a plethora of special features, such as THREE audio commentaries and a personal favorite of mine - a reversible cover art. It’s safe to say Deepstar Six is a thrilling, fun experience in the deep dark deep for 80s junkies and with this 4K UHD release should get a revival to its cult film status.
