OUR MOVIE REVIEW:

This Summer, the 2015 horror satire Dude Bro Party Massacre III is touring at select Alamo Drafthouse cinemas across the country. I’m sorry to admit that I was only made aware of its existence this year, but happy to report that I am completely smitten by this movie. It’s fitting to schedule a sort of press tour 8 years after its initial release, cementing its reputation as an instant “cult classic".

Dude Bro Party Massacre III is presented as a “lost film”. The audience is watching what is supposedly the last copy in existence, recorded onto a VHS tape from a late night TV broadcast before the film was banned some time in the 1980s. The bootleg analog style is present throughout the film, feeding every bit of VHS nostalgia, complete with partial commercial breaks that are cut off as a result of the recording being paused. According to my husband (the analog enthusiast) it’s “extremely authentic”. They put in a lot of stylistic effort and it pays off greatly. Dude Bro Party Massacre III begins with a brief recap of the first two installments of the franchise (which do not exist in real life), about a frat guy who gets brutally murdered by a mysterious killer. Part III is about frat guy’s twin brother coming to rush the frat to find out what happened to him. Although the novelty begins to fade after the first act, it earns its stay for the laugh out loud line deliveries. Some of my favorites include calling Greek week "Easter for men" and characters riding in the car set to a song that sings "nobody is gonna die".

DBPM3 was made by 5 Second Films; a YouTube collective who have essentially been making vines since long before Vine. I’ve seen far worse from YouTubers turned filmmakers. At times it can feel like a marathon of 5 second bits strung together rather than a cohesive film, but hey, that’s what makes satire so great (Black Dynamite, anyone?). The movie of course leans into horror tropes to its advantage, and although that can get stale for some viewers, I was happy to spend 90 minutes in this nostalgia-soaked world.

Rather than wait for the next Svengoolie midnight movie broadcast, go ahead and rent Dude Bro Party Massacre III on VOD.
