"A newly divorced sober mom goes to a wedding with a much younger date and behaves like a drunk 25 year old bridesmaid to try and keep up."
OUR MOVIE REVIEW:
I often hear sitcoms referred to in a derogatory fashion, with many people associating them with cheap and unthoughtful attempts at an unearned laugh. Situational comedy when done well can be quite brilliant and For Worse is a prime example of the comedy art form firing on all cylinders.
Lauren (Amy Landecker) is a recent divorcee who is trying to balance life after marriage along with a quarter century of sobriety. She meets a charming younger man at her acting class, Sean (Nico Haraga), and winds up in a casual fling that leads to an unlikely connection and an impromptu wedding date. Despite their generational age gap, Lauren and Sean have a heartwarming rapport and Sean provides much needed encouragement and support to Lauren as she navigates post-marriage life. Nico Haraga brings a laid back, confidence presence that makes Lauren and others feel at ease and radiates an undeniable magnetic personality that Lauren is gravitated towards, but this also draws in some competition at the wedding they’re attending and Lauren struggles with her own insecurities as she struggles to compete with a younger woman who is interested in Sean.
Bradley Whitford and Ken Marino enter the arena of the wedding as if it’s the Roman Coliseum, trying their might at winning Lauren’s heart. Whitford brings his trademark dry wit and humor and Marino quickly devolves from a cheesy but affable middle aged bachelor to an eccentric wildcard personality injecting absurdity into the event.
The supporting cast shines but Landecker offers the most to the movie with her charm on screen and off. She is likable, relatable and easy to root for her character in her search for happiness post-married life. For Worse is a masterful directorial debut from Amy Landecker who also writes and stars in this hilarious midlife crisis-turned-renaissance romanceless comedy.
