REPOSSESSED SYNOPSIS:
Parody of The Exorcist (1973), with Linda Blair once again possessed by Satan and Leslie Nielsen as the exorcist.
Ready for a devil of a good time? Linda Blair will scare you silly when she’s Repossessed! Blair stars in this uproariously spooky spoof with Leslie Nielsen, the deadpan comedy hero who provided loop-de-loops of laughter in Airplane! and rapid-fire hilarity in The Naked Gun. The fun begins when grown-up Blair starts spewing curses and pea soup. This is a job for ex-exorcist Nielsen! So he gears up to battle the spirit world—and finds he must also outwit a pair of phony TV evangelists (including Ned Beatty), trying to cash in on the exorcism biz. Get Repossessed. The supernatural hijinks will have your head spinning with laughter!
OUR FILM REVIEW
Repossessed is a Blu-ray release of a film that many may not be familiar with, especially since the film was pegged with negative reviews and a poor box office turnout in 1990. Taking comedy legend Leslie Nielsen and putting him in a horror parody that takes direct target at The Exorcist along with recent events for the time, it’s astonishing Linda Blair made a return as a possessed person once again, obviously playing a similar character to her recognizable Regan. The idea is solid and we’ve seen similar parodies come more than a decade later with Scary Movie 2 and yet it’s so much more sour here as opposed to the future attempt.
The film looks just fine, really capitalizing on a studio space that a televised “live” exoticism used to gather money over the phone to free this woman’s soul from the devil. Things don’t go as planned and some unnecessary, exceptionally outdated jokes occur - even from a 1990 standard. All involved is a waste for this failed comedy, never garnering a single laugh out of myself and while a few of the more ridiculous humor gets a nod from me for the attempt - it still doesn’t get a chuckle.
Originally releasing at home on VHS and laserdisc in 1990, then returning to homes with the DVD release in 2003 for another long hiatus to today when Kino Lorber has remastered this film to the best it can be in consideration of the product itself and allowed fans of the maestro Nielsen a chance to watch him once again poke fun at a serious tone. Massive reappear can be applied though that director of the film, Bob Logan has returned with a Brand New commentary track, an added bonus for the rare few that enjoy the experience enough to watch it through once more.
