SCENT OF A WOMAN SYNOPSIS:

A prep school student needing money agrees to "babysit" a blind man, but the job is not at all what he anticipated.

The legendary Al Pacino (The Godfather, Scarface) once again proves that he is one of cinema's finest actors with his Academy Award®-winning* portrayal of Frank Slade, an overbearing retired Lieutenant Colonel. Slade, who is blind, hires young prep student Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell, NCIS: Los Angeles, Batman Forever) as his assistant, and the two very different men embark on a wild weekend trip that will change both of their lives forever.

Directed by Martin Brest (Midnight Run, Meet Joe Black) and featuring supporting performances from Gabrielle Anwar, Bradley Whitford, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Scent Of A Woman is a heartwarming and heart-wrenching tale of opposites attracting.

OUR FILM REVIEW

Featuring a brand new remastering of the original negative and overseen by director Martin Brest, Shout Factory has outdone themselves with this latest offering, remastering a 1990s classic. Set primarily in the Autumn, the film holds a warm glow and somber tone that is highlighted by the upgrade. The black levels are incredible with Dolby Vision and the visuals give a true 90s feel that looks better than ever.

The audio won’t amaze anyone looking for a massive improvement over the 2012 Blu-ray release. The film is mostly the same with the 5.1 DTS-HD MA mix being rather subtle and nuanced with its dramatic feel. It all feels appropriate for the film itself, but at the same time isn’t going to win anyone over for a desire for this improvement alone. Thomas Newman’s score collects a grand deal of ambience surrounding the atmosphere with emotion.

The film remains a highlight of Al Pacino’s career, winning the actor the Academy Award for Best Performance in 1993, amongst many other nominations and wins for the film. Scent of a Woman still holds a certified fresh 82% with the consensus being, “It might soar on Al Pacino's performance more than the drama itself, but what a performance it is -- big, bold, occasionally over-the-top, and finally giving the Academy pause to award the star his first Oscar.”

The upgrades continue with this offering however with two new special features never before released on previous versions of the title. A great addition for any fans collection - albeit a lack of commentary is unfortunate.
