OUR MOVIE REVIEW:
I haven’t laughed this much for a wedding comedy since the Steve Martin version of Father of the Bride. Like that 1991 classic, You're Cordially Invited is both funny and touching, making it sure to become a new favorite for intergenerational viewing.
To set the stage, I went into this movie knowing absolutely nothing except two things:
1) It was about a wedding (or two)
2) Paired Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon in the starring roles
I couldn’t quite envision or imagine them together, but I was open-minded and hoped for the best.
Imagine my shock and absolute delight when their on-screen chemistry blew my hair back with its sheer awesomeness! I haven’t seen Ferrell sync this well with a female costar since he and Rachel McAdams made beautiful music together in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Actually, his chemistry with Witherspoon in You're Cordially Invited is even better than that. It’s perfection!
If you think of Ferrell as a goofy guy but not leading man material, this movie might set you straight. He plays a devoted single dad who has his silly and zany moments, but also ends up being the romantic catch of the century. He has a line toward the end of the film that had every woman in the theatre swooning (you’ll know it when you hear it).
As for Witherspoon, she hasn’t busted out her comedy chops in some time, but she’s delightful in this role - stunning, smart and wickedly funny. And did I mention this woman can sing? Be sure to watch through the end credits for a spectacular duet between Ferrell and Witherspoon that was the icing on the perfect slice of wedding cake for me.
I loved so much about this film. The plot may be a little predictable for the genre, but it's aptly handled. The consistent barrage of shenanigans between families keeps the film moving. The dialogue infused is snappy and in turn keeps the audience constantly chuckling. There aren’t the raunchy elements or laugh-out-loud moments you would come to expect from a classic wedding comedy like Wedding Crashers, but You're Cordially Invited has depth and nuance. It’s the perfect film for kids, parents and grandparents to watch together because there’s something for everyone here, albeit they’re all okay with some heavy swearing.
It touches on some deep, family issues as well as general relationship concerns that anyone can relate to. There are many heartwarming and touching moments as characters work through their relationships on screen - but enough humor inserted that it doesn’t become overbearing or preachy.
Anyone who has experienced family drama, chaotic family events, like weddings or feeling like an outsider in your own family will find something to like in You're Cordially Invited. Get drawn in by the incredible on-screen chemistry between the two leads, and you may even find something to love about it.
