Comedy Special Review

BRETT GOLDSTEIN:

THE SECOND BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE (2025)

Director: Jeff Tomsic.

Runtime: 60 minutes.

Studio: HBO.

"Brett Goldstein's debut stand-up special covers relationships and sex, with Ted Lasso references and possible musical moments."

OUR DOCUMENTARY REVIEW:

A cold open for any comedy special is always a question mark, namely because the point of the opener is to showcase an arrival to the venue and the appearance on the stage with hopefully some comedy along the way. It’s not meant to harness any staying power, more so filler to get you in the mood for the show ahead, Brett’s has a very sincere joke about this being his first special and while it may not stay long after the remainder of the set is laid out — it already has more staying power than most.

Taking observance of his first round of American standup (comparing the level of confidence of most comedians to his level of confidence during sex), the specifics of a White House visit, and other “relatable” stories. Sprinkled in are one-sided conversations about the concept of marriage, petting dogs and new ideas for hit shows.

As an advocate Brett Goldstein’s career as a writer and thespian on shows like Ted Lasso and Shrinking, and notably his podcast run with Films to Be Buried With. From his role as the rough around the edges Roy Kent with gruff behind every word which for those unfamiliar with the true Brett Goldstein behind the character - he’s the reverse of a Roy Kent with a very soft spoken tone.

Bringing a fun contrast between American culture and British culture, Brett Goldstein: The Second Best Day of My Life is a hilarious offering that provides a cultural perspective shift for the average American viewer.
