OUR MOVIE REVIEW:

As the marketing would have you believe; Companion is a sci fi thriller with rom com elements mixed together to make the “perfect date night movie”. For some, that may be true. But for those of us that were lured in by “the team that brought you Barbarian”, there might be a different expectation.

For the most part, Companion sticks the landing in its implications, gags, plot navigation, and genuine humor. The performances are stellar, but the dialogue felt too sterile and forced at times. I loved the set design and costuming, but cared less and less about that as the film went on when it couldn't seem to get a grip on what it wanted to say.

Some might see it as a movie that wears its film references on its sleeve, but I see it as a montage of derivative hodge-podge. Not only obvious nods to The Terminator, but the idea of implanted memories and not being able to determine what is real or not is ripped right out of Total Recall. It's trying to be a little bit of The Stepford Wives, Don't Worry Darling, and even M3GAN, all of which execute on their themes better than Companion. It wants to portray women without agency, but actively relies on the viewer to piece together social commentary based on other movies they've seen. I'm just not convinced it is an ally in the way that it thinks it is.

Given the company Companion finds itself in. I didn't hate it, but I didn't really like it either. In 2025, I just can't look past the lack of thought put into its themes. It doesn't say anything new, and I think your enjoyment of Companion depends on whether you need it to or not. Maybe my expectations are too high, but I still think it can be a great flick to catch with a date or some friends.

Either way, it’s in theaters now to see for yourself!
