OUR MOVIE REVIEW:

Wes Anderson's latest little diddy, Asteroid City, is a 1950's desert dreamscape. It's been declared his best since Budapest by many, but it comes with a cost.

The story follows the debut of a theater troupe's new play about different groups of folks traveling to an oasis city for the unveiling of a historic asteroid site. A strange and unexplainable event occurs, causing the town to undergo a strict government quarantine. The quirky visitors keep each other company and make the most of their time being stuck together.

It seems as though Anderson took all the signature charm from his past works and shoved them into a nonsensical diorama. All the aesthetic and wit is there, but it's fighting its way through a plot where the story is not strong.

I can definitely see how Asteroid City has become a fast fan favorite. WA has been honing his craft for decades now and has his signature visual charm down to a science, but in my humble opinion, it's hardly his best work to date. If you’re new to WA movies, maybe don’t make this your first one.

That's not to say it isn't worth seeing it in theaters (it absolutely is).

Whether you love the big-screen, shared audience experience is your thing, get out and see it quick; my sources say this movie is making a swift distribution to digital on July 11th (2023). Whichever viewing experience floats your boat, don't miss Asteroid City before it gets lost in the summer blockbuster sauce.
