HOLLYWOOD DREAMS & NIGHTMARES:
THE ROBERT ENGLUND STORY (2023)

MPAA: NR
Release Date: 06/06/23 [Screambox]

"A classically trained actor and director, Robert Englund has become one of the most revolutionary horror icons of our generation. Throughout his career, Englund starred in many well-known movies, but shot to super-stardom with his portrayal of supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger in the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET franchise. This unique and intimate portrait captures the man behind the glove and features interviews with Englund and his wife Nancy, Lin Shaye, Eli Roth, Tony Todd, Heather Langenkamp and more."

OUR DOCUMENTARY REVIEW:

It’s no secret that Robert Englund has had quite the acting career. From winning over audiences at a young age in small Glendale stage plays, to bit parts on low budget movies and TV shows, to eventual icon status on and off the silver screen, all of this success and more is covered in Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story. Englund’s timeline of success is laid out via interviews with fellow actors and filmmakers like Heather Lagenkamp, Lin Shaye, and MIck Garris to name a few.

As informative and casual the doc is, it does at times feel like different pieces of completely independent documentaries spliced together as one supercut. I can’t tell if some of the interviews are from today or 2008. There’s the occasional animated scenes with certain stories, but other than that, there is not much else going on visually between all the interviews within the 2 hour runtime, which is totally fine if you're in the mood for a cozy “cool uncle” storytelling vibe. Grab a drink and kick back with it! But personally, I was left feeling a little restless looking for a little more stimulation than full length press tour interviews.

Just in time for his 75th birthday, Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story is out now on Screambox! Get your scream- I mean stream on!
