OUR MOVIE REVIEW:

If one must  lurk the night as a vampire, they must not be afraid of the fact that they may take a life; however, Sasha sort of has a problem - her empathetic response triggers any time she sees or thinks of human beings dying horribly. It’s quite the predicament. She lives off IVs full of blood her father brings home from the hospital, but soon her parents decide it’s time for her to fend for herself. Therefore, Sasha begins searching the night for blood in order to survive, however, it’s also a journey of someone who refuses to compromise their compassion.

Quebec filmmaker Ariane Louis-Seize arrives on the scene with her debut feature that’s an incredibly sweet coming of age horror-rom-com. Though some elements leave a bit more to be desired, it still ends up being one of this year’s highlights. Lead Sara Montpetit’s timid, yet charming performance elevates Sasha’s arc in navigating her compassionate crutch. Its great contemplation on the very concept of taking a life and if in any way it can be compassionate in nature; the film acknowledges the situations in which life is just not worth living anymore, and the ways we see these situations come into Sasha’s arc is clever and sometimes beautiful.

There’s a blend of many genres here and sometimes, some elements don’t mix the best; with it being a teenage coming of age romance as well as a vampire movie, some things about it are just more interesting than others. Though the teenage romance is sweet and blends with the moral question at the center, the other coming-of-age elements just aren't as interesting. Its horror elements are also pretty tame. Not to say disappointing; this leads to the question if this was due to a budget constraint, or an intentional choice by Louis-Seize. At times the film leads you to believe it's building to a bloody climax, but there’s not much blood outside of the countless IVs Sasha sips through like Capri-Suns.

Though in exchange for those expectations, it all ends on a sweet note that honestly makes me eager to revisit Humanist Vampire Seeking Consulting Suicidal Adult. It oozes with compassion, charm,  romance, and laughs. It’s an incredibly impressive debut with enough defined form in the works to leave me excited to see what Ariane Louise-Seize has next.
