The Verdict: A Must-See

Michael Head’s The Spin centers on two blokes who happen to run a failing record store. With their store set to close due to falling behind on rent, the duo take a trip to find some quick dough.

Brenock O’Connor and Owen Colgan play the pair and they instantly share a brotherly bond that feels beyond genuine. It’s a feeling when you’ve truly grown to know someone through time in a friendship and you feel naturally yourself around one another - that’s Dermot and Elvis.

It’s a breezy, feel good film that takes this trip on the leisure route. They reconnect with old friends, develop feelings for new loves, pick up an interesting assortment of hitchhikers, and find themselves on their journey cross country.

Where Dermot and Elvis are incredibly chill individuals, their landlord Sadie (Tara Lynne O’Neill) is rightfully aggressive about them not paying rent, but the way she goes about taking revenge on the two is uncalled for. It’s a deadline tale where the end of the week actually comes much sooner than expected, since there was never trust to start.

Maura Higgins (Love Island) makes her acting debut with a very minor role of Dermot’s extinguished flame. Having just come off of watching The Traitors, it was a pleasant surprise to see her pop up. The supporting cast as a whole pulls their weight in pushing our protagonists along and not allowing them to stay in one spot for an extended period of time.

The Spin can be silly, sweet, exaggerated, and comforting all in one go. O’Connor and Colgan play off one another incredibly well and make for a worthwhile watch that’s truly just a pleasant trip from point A to point B with plenty of detours along the way.
