After the events of 2023’s horror-adjacent hit M3GAN, where robotics engineer Gemma is almost killed by her own creation, a robot made to help with her niece Cady’s grief, she has shifted gears and is now dedicated to regulating AI. When the feds show up at her door with heavy suspicion that Gemma is involved with creating another murderous robot from her M3GAN source code, she must team up with an old acquaintance in order to stop it from destroying the world. 

 

This imaginative sequel takes the fun action route and leans into the insanity built upon in the first movie, which makes it easily digestible. The first entry works as horror/sci-fi because what happens to this family is actually intense and at times, rooted in believable reality. M3GAN 2.0 is able to still discuss the concepts of advanced technology and the negative effects,  while also taking us on a fun adventure. It also focuses on the promises the characters make to themselves at the end of the previous movie and even extends that character growth to M3GAN herself. The enemies-to-friends aspect works in their favor here. I really didn’t mind the storyline kinda being a little messy simply because I was having too much fun — and for me, that’s all I need for a movie like this. 

 

I must add, with full respect, so much of this movie reminded me of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The reattaching of body limbs stuffed in luggage, teaming up with the last person or thing you'd ever imagine teaming up with, and good ole serenading. Two sequels that know how iconic their main character is.
