The Verdict: A Maybe

Everyone at the very least has a vague awareness of the story of David versus Goliath. For myself, that’s essentially where my knowledge ends. As someone that has never read a page of the Bible, I’m taking this telling of David as gospel (with some animated flourishes for the whole family).

David was really quite a surprising entry this time of year, with animation that really matched the prime DreamWorks days and worked well with the story at hand. As a relatively non-violent feature, the film does a good job of depicting the fear of war and the circumstances of one’s actions.

Of course being a tale straight out of the Bible, God plays a major hand in this story, guiding David’s hand and producing him with courage. For someone who was only aware of the David vs Goliath aspect of the story, I was surprised about just how much I was in the dark on. A prophecy that he’d be the new king, befriending the royal family by accident, becoming sudden rivals after all these years and ultimately facing more than just internal conflicts in a world at war.

It’s also worth mentioning that David is secretly a musical, with some well-orchestrated songs that really pull some extra levity into the situations at hand. While they’re not as catchy as say The Greatest Showman soundtrack, the music plays a purpose in the overall tone of the picture as a whole.

It’s a fascinating animated feature that functions well for someone who is familiar with the source, as well as someone who is just as clueless as myself. In the end, it should appease most parties just looking for something simple and inoffensive to send off 2025.
