The Verdict: A Maybe

During their holiday at a cabin deep in the snowy Lauretian mountains, Mallory documents her boyfriend Alex's violent parasomnia. When his sleepwalking gets worse, Mallory suspects the cause may be something far more sinister than a mere sleep disorder. Using her expertise as a documentary filmmaker, Mallory digs into Alex's shadowy past and begins to unravel a decades-long mystery steeped in trauma and the occult. As darkness closes in, and ancient evil awakens – plunging the couple into a downward spiral of madness and horror that threatens to destroy more than just their relationship. By the time the end credits roll, DREAM EATER will have you questioning who you're really sleeping next to at night.

The Blu-ray release of ‘Eli Roth Presents: Dream Eater’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty good for the most part and offers a relatively clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentation throughout that aside from some occasions of banding and other minor artifacts in some of the immensely dark sequences holds up well. Detail is generally good with character specifics and backgrounds both interior and exterior looking capable, while the limited and often intentionally muted colors in scenes never look underwhelming, and black levels hold up well in many moments although less so in a few instances of extreme darkness. Overall, this is a pretty nice high definition presentation that looks better than expected for the low budget film and fans should be quite pleased with the results.
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack provides a clean, sharp and occasionally aggressive audio presentation throughout that immerses you into the world of the couple and their nightmarish secluded cabin vacation. It takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send some music, along with eerie noises and mechanical screams, plus more throughout the various speakers, while always making certain that all dialogue and other audio elements remain consistently clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that holds up well throughout and offers some extra immersion and tension to the experience.
