'DTF St. Louis' Review

Limited Series. [Episodes 1 - 3]

Aired On: HBO Max.

Release Date: 03/01/26.

Genre: Comedy. Mystery.

The Verdict: A Must-See

DTF St. Louis is a surreal comedy that delivers its humor with a sense of sincerity that makes it all the more hilarious. It’s terrifically timed, and its seriousness offers some of the best comedy in years.

The series centers on a pair of married couples who discover a new dating app called DTF St. Louis in which individuals can meet others that are “Down to Fuck”… an affair, a murder, and a mystery then ensue.

Jason Bateman (Ozark) and David Harbour (Stranger Things) are quite the dynamic duo that work off one another extraordinarily well. Their delivery is very dry and conversational, which makes for a much more impactful comedy landscape. Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), Joy Sunday (Wednesday), and Wynn Everett (The Newsroom) are all outstanding in their varying degrees of supporting roles, with Jenkins and Sunday delivering some of the best lines of the entire series.

Filmed in a fashion that more resembles a gritty crime thriller than a typical goofball comedy and that’s because it ultimately is. It's an absurd comedy encompassed by its dark mystery; supplying a commentary on the standard environments experienced in these types of shows — a bleak isolated emptiness with unexplainable light sources. It’s difficult not to be at the least fascinated by the fashion this mystery plays out and just how unfathomably dry the humor comes off.

The style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s deeply unique and comes out of the gate swinging instantly. As it shuffles between before and after the incident in question, the pacing is quite interesting in its flow as it deciphers the crime scenario. I have never been more taken aback by a series in quite some time, with an exceptionally puzzling format and sense of humor. Yet after a phenomenal premiere, the series loses a bit of its comedic spontaneity as it moves along.
