The Verdict: A Must-Buy

The gripping, action-packed cop drama End of Watch has made its physical media 4K UHD debut from Shout! Studios, a Radial Entertainment company. From writer/director David Ayer (Training Day), the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, David Harbour, and Frank Grillo. Available as a limited edition two-disc Steelbook, the release includes a number of bonus features including audio commentary by David Ayer, behind the scenes featurettes, and deleted scenes.
In their mission to abide by their oath to serve and protect, officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña) have formed a powerful brotherhood to ensure they both go home at the end of watch. But nothing can prepare them for the violent backlash that happens after they pull over the members of a notorious drug cartel for a routine traffic stop.
Technical Review:
The way that End of Watch was filmed was always under scrutiny for the chaotic nature of direction. It resembles a found footage / documentary style of film to fully absorb the audience into the world of the bodycam of police work. The 4K UHD upgrade far succeeds over the Blu-ray and while due to the master at use, the film is never going to look overly crisp for that grainy realism, the remaster does clean up some fine detailing.
The new Dolby Vision enchanced 4K disc, certainly helps enhance the final picture. Still faithful to the original vision that David Ayer had for the film alongside cinematographer Roman Vasyanov, who he later collaborated with again on Fury. The enhancements are naturally not going to exceed their limitations due to the style of film, but in comparison to what has come before - it's still a terrific upgrade.
Audio wise, the track appears to be directly lifted from the previous release from Universal. It's aggressive and full of surrounding atmosphere, which can hurt the dialogue smoothness which is just a casualty of using cameras like this. However, a majority of the experience is clear, it's just slim moments that become effected by the fashion it was captured. The last act especially amps up the ambience and surrounding noises, which causes a greater sense of unease as the unfortunate chaos ensues. It's certainly an anxiety attack waiting to happen.
