The Verdict: A Must-See

Over the last few years I’ve really been diving deep into reality television and I’ve finally come around to House of Villains. While my form of reality television is just like this, in competition, I’m not familiar with about half of these contestants if they weren’t featured on Survivor, The Traitors, Love Island or The Challenge…

The house consists of eleven:

  • Paul Abrahamian (Big Brother)

  • Tyson Apostol (The Challenge, Survivor)

  • Kate Chastain (Below Deck, The Traitors)

  • Jackie Christie (Basketball Wives)

  • Drita D’Avanzo (Mob Wives)

  • Plane Jane (RuPaul’s Drag Race)

  • Johnny Middlebrooks (Love Island, The Challenge)

  • Ashley Mitchell (The Challenge)

  • Tiffany “New York” Pollard (Flavor of Love, I Love New York, House of Villains Seasons 1 & 2)

  • Christine Quinn (Selling Sunset)

  • Tom Sandoval (The Traitors, Vanderpump Rules

Nonetheless having Community legend Joel McHale host adds a huge bonus to the experience and whether you know the contestants or not, their bickering back and forth truly is entertaining to even the most uneducated of their antics.

From bed selections to petty grievances to not understanding this is all a game… the show is a spiral of insanity that truly never finds its footing. But that’s not a bad thing in this case, the chaotic nature of the series helps embellish the personalities of the contestants as they’re never quite prepared to be in a competition.

From a personal standpoint, from episode one so no spoilers as to who departs, my go-to connection is easily Tom Sandoval because of his iconic turn at The Traitors. To be clear, all of these people aren’t particularly good for one reason or another so it’s best to just pick the most entertaining. He’s actually not the one causing the most ruckus amongst the house however that goes to the people I’m much less familiar with and their behavior seems to be working as they’re invited back year after year.

If you’ve seen a reality competition series then you’ve seen a wide range of the games they’re gonna play, it actually gave most familiarity to the unfortunately in purgatory series Claim to Fame. They are ridiculous, but easy and as being a house of villains they very expectedly say the wrong thing at the wrong time and get put on the chopping block. The roasts (or speeches depending on how you see them) this season alone are insane - it feels both scripted but entirely spontaneous considering the type of people they are (self-centered).

Truth is House of Villains is an effortless watch, it’s a lot of fun, and it's easy to root for the villain since they are all the options we have. Episodes don't regularly end with an elimination so with 11 reality stars in the mix, things tend to end on a cliffhanger… for all the added suspense of treachery. There’s no clear winner in sight but maybe it’s the journey to get there that’s all that matters and with this cast… there’s always something to fight about, especially $200,000.
