Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn star in this fast-talking, offbeat mob comedy, now presented for the first time in 4K. Made follows long-time friends Bobby and Ricky, small-time operators on the edges of the L.A. underworld, whose trip to New York on behalf of a minor mob figure (Peter Falk) quickly spirals into a chaotic, darkly comic run through the city’s criminal margins.
Technical Review + Personal Opinion:
Made tells the story of two struggling friends who seize the chance to prove their worth by taking an out-of-town job for the head of the local crime family. Bobby is a quiet man who carefully speaks up at the right time or quietly does what he needs to do, while Ricky is a fast-talking, hyper man who repeatedly says things he shouldn’t without a second thought. As the two head out of town for a job without knowing what it is or what it might entail, it soon turns into a chaotic clash that tests their smarts and abilities.
After making quite a wave in the indie scene with Swingers, Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn reunite one last time in Made. Favreau wrote and directed Made, showcasing his humorous, clever screenplay with heart and style. The film’s cast includes Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, Sean Combs, Famke Janssen, Faizon Love, David O’Hara, Vincent Pastore, and Peter Falk, with nearly everyone delivering capable, solid performances that contribute positively throughout.
The 4K transfer expertly captures the film's early-2000s look, shot on 35 mm film. It doesn't try to mimic a digital negative, retaining the movie’s natural film grain. The color grading is generally spectacular, with the early-2000s division between the warm colors of Los Angeles and the cold urban look of New York City—a massive leap in quality since the early-2000s physical media releases.
The audio design is equally impressive. Dialogue is front and center, with the center channel doing most of the talking. However, it rarely needs boosting, as the on-screen performers are consistently easy to hear. The surround channels provide an adequate but effective sense of environment during the club scenes and the city visuals, and Lyle Workman’s score sounds fantastic in this remaster.
Producing alongside Vaughn, and while it’s a very different type of film in many respects, Favreau and Vaughn naturally keep up the energetic conversation as they bounce topics off one another, as best friends would in a natural setting.
Jon Favreau’s comedic crime tale Made arrives home on 4K UHD for the first time in a collectible new Steelbook release from Lionsgate Limited in celebration of its 25th Anniversary.
The 4K release features the film with a gorgeous new full Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 that looks great and is nicely paired up with an equally solid Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that together have this fun ride looking and sounding far better than it ever has at home previously.
The release is held back by its lack of additional features, with the add-ons being entirely archival extras. From Commentary to Deleted Scenes and Featurettes, it’s packed with a Blu-ray copy (also featuring the new transfer and Atmos audio) inside a collectible Steelbook with original artwork by Robert Bruno.
