Label: Kino Lorber.

Form of Release: Blu-Ray.

The Verdict: A Must-Buy

Monk is easily one of the best shows to ever grave our screens. A weekly murder mystery with the former detective, now consultant Adrian Monk (played by the charismatic Tony Shalhoub), whom you can't help but warm up to as more is established about his character. Monk is assisted by several series regulars such as his personal assistants Sharona (Bitty Schram) for the first few seasons and Natalie (Traylor Howard) for the remainder, Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), Lieutenant Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford), therapist Dr. Kroger (Stanley Kamel) and of course his true love Trudy (Melora Hardin). Monk isn't a usual man nor usual detective - he has his ways about him that in modern times would be diagnosed, however in the age of the show we journey with Adrian as he makes due with his condition and hopes to find solace in his existence.

The show ran for 8 seasons, 125 episodes and one feature length movie that came to Peacock 14 years after the shows conclusion. Surprisingly the show never felt any fatigue and had a strong outing the entire way through (and that's on multiple playthroughs).

Now with everything upgraded to a satisfactory 1080p quality over the initial DVD releases, this is a series I have watched countless times (along with it's fellow USA colleague Psych) and this Kino Lorber set is a cut above the rest. Fans of this beloved series should be pleasantly surprised and in a landscape where streaming is so uncertain (especially with beloved shows) this is the surefire way to have your favorite available at all times. Plus as an added bonus, the movie is included to finalize this fantastic set.

Technical Review:

Monk arrives with an excellent Blu-ray debut with a digital AVC encoded 1080p transfer sourced from a 4K restoration in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. Kino Lorber gives this eight season release multiple discs per case, allowing the show room to breath, and avoid compression issues. The video quality is vibrant and clear, a major upgrade to the previously released versions of the series and clearly the folks behind the transfer lovingly put this show in the best light here. Remarkably even the earlier episodes of the series, share just as much of an upgrade as the later.

With the Blu-ray transition come a noticeable shift in the audio to DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio for all seasons and the movie. To be perfectly honest, the audio has never been an issue with this series and the show continues to balance its elements seamlessly and with clarity. There does not appear to be any significant damage or age to the audio track. Fans of the show should be as pleased as ever with this entire package.
