The Verdict: A Must-Buy

Comedy dynamo Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda, Tropic Thunder) stars as the sweet-natured Ignacio, a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery that can barely afford to feed the orphans who live there. Inspired by a local wrestling hero, he decides to moonlight as the not-so-famous Luchador “Nacho Libre” to earn money for the monastery—not to mention the admiration of his forbidden love, the beautiful nun Sister Encarnación (Ana de la Reguera, Cowboys & Aliens). Written by Mike White (School of Rock, TV’s The White Lotus) and directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Gentlemen Broncos), Nacho Libre serves up “endearingly ridiculous” (The New York Times) fun from start to finish! With music from Danny Elfman (Beetlejuice), Beck, Los Lobos, Jack Black and more!

Technical Review:

I remember seeing Nacho Libre in the cinema when I was ten years old, I remember finding it more odd than funny and at the time having seen the tv spots over and over on Nickelodeon, I had already seen all the jokes. Years passed and I gave it another shot after I fell in love with the director's other work - Napoleon Dynamite. Long before Blu-ray, I had the DVD and had that on replay over and over for background noise if nothing else. This latest 4K transfer is an impressive upgrade for a kid that grew up with the film in SD quality, but it's not perfect by any means - but who's asking for perfection.

The DTS-HD Master Audio doesn't seem to add much to the experience, not providing much of use of it beyond the film's wrestling. It's a dialogue heavy comedy, fueled by its quirkiness and that doesn't necessarily need the most hardcore audio adjustments. Nevertheless, Nacho Libre is the best it's ever looked and the best it's ever sounded - turn the volume up for the iconic "Naaacccchhhhooooo!".
