The Verdict: A Must-Buy

Based on an incredible true story, Roofman follows Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), an Army veteran and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman. After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys “R” Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move. But when he falls for Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mom drawn to his undeniable charm, his double life begins to unravel, setting off a compelling and suspenseful game of cat and mouse as his past closes in.
Certified Fresh™ on Rotten Tomatoes® with an impressive 87%, Roofman received widespread critical acclaim upon its world premiere at TIFF in September along with a TIFF Tribute Award for Tatum, as well as upon its October theatrical release in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. by Paramount Pictures under its first-look deal with Miramax. Variety praised Tatum for delivering “the most mature performance of his career” while Next Best Picture said Dunst, who just received a Film Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance, is “stellar” and “effortlessly charming as Leigh.” Newsweek hailed Roofman as the “perfect balance between suspense, heart and pure entertainment,” calling it, “one of the most sincere and thoughtful movies to hit the big screen in 2025.”
Roofman stars Channing Tatum as the film’s titular character, as well as a stellar cast including Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, Jimmy O. Yang and Peter Dinklage.
Technical Review:
Roofman doesn’t necessarily utilize the full functionality of the 4K UHD, showcasing a showcase of sharp detail and a uniquely thrilling dramedy. Taking place prominently in a nostalgic Toy ”R” Us setting, this location built from scratch to rebuild our childhood store looks wonderfully accurate. The production design is second to none when it comes to the store itself as it truly is a fully functional store that never was. Not releasing on Blu-ray separately was an interesting decision as it doesn’t have enough here to purely warrant the upgrade otherwise. It’s a good looking transfer in comparison to the DVD release, but it’s not offering anything outstanding for a standard dramedy.
The audio is similar in shape, with really outstanding atmospheric noises and some fantastic uses of the score. It’s nothing abnormal for a release utilizing TrueHD. It heightens the overall experience, but it certainly isn’t doing more than what’s necessary for the film on screen.
