The Verdict: A Maybe
Prime Video’s newest teen summer drama, Sterling Point, centers around a seventeen-year-old girl, Annie, and her twin brother Conner, who inherit an entire island from their estranged late grandfather. Annie sets out to visit the island, but what she discovers is far beyond what she’s been led to believe her entire life.
After quite a few rocky moments in the pilot that left me rolling my eyes, I found myself trudging through more episodes riding on the little charm that it had. It's one of those where you have to turn your brain off and not think about it too hard. The other episodes do pick up, but it still doesn't shy away from misguided actions and muddled themes.
I truly did not like most of these characters, and they feel like they are part of different shows. Annie was my favorite, even with how painfully obvious it is that her actress is well over the age of seventeen. Conner is the worst, and he feels like ChatGPT especially wrote him with no dialogue revisions. Also, the way the main crew uses Sully as a gofer, and we barely learn anything about them as a character, left an awful taste in my mouth.
The lack of adults on this island is also glaring. At least in other young adult shows, the parents, teachers, coaches, etc. are around and make the world feel more believable, and they are some of the best characters. The adults that are lurking around Sterling Point feel extremely surface-level and only serve specific plot points or random comedic relief. They don't feel part of the story, even though it’s the actions of some of these adults that are the reason these kids are in the situation they are in.
Certain key story choices felt out of place and not earned, but that’s young adult content for ya. If you're looking to scratch an itch for fleeting summer romance that was left by The Summer I Turned Pretty, this might do the trick. But if that show was just on the border of tolerance for you, then this might not be the one.
