The Verdict: A Maybe

The Hunger Games meets Waterworld in Storm Rider: Legend of Hammerhead. Fans of good ol’ dystopian science fiction might be drawn to the film, as it feels like a mishmash of a dozen teen movies of the same genre. The story follows two young daredevils who venture into a deadly storm – one that separates them from a safe and prosperous land called Argos. Stranded after a great flood that left many bound to island life, most survivors don’t dare tempt fate. But young islander Neb (Marco Ilsø), plagued by visions of the future, teams up with Maia (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) to face the storm and get to the truth of what lies beyond it.
As a casual fan of the sci fi genre, the concept of the film is fun. Still, Storm Rider: Legend of Hammerhead feels quite busy. I felt like I was being dropped right into what looks like a well-established world, but one that’s not explained well enough to understand. I couldn’t help but feel like I was not invited to these water wars… I was just hanging on for dear life for an hour and 45 minutes.
On the plus side, the visual effects are good, and directors Zoran Lisinac and Dormagoj Mazuran made an ambitious film shot on the most gorgeous landscapes Croatia has to offer. Its cast of characters is pleasantly watchable. The movie also boasts some solid pod racer-esque action sequences that I assume were inspired by Star Wars. I just wish there were either fewer characters – or more character development – so I didn’t feel like I was drowning in Storm Rider’s messy plot.
