The Verdict: A Must-See

Celebrating 50 years, The Muppet Show is back and it’s just as wonderful as ever to be a Muppet fanatic, even if it’s just for a singular special. A special that plays out as more of a nostalgic pilot episode (with a piece of dialogue even aimed at that). As someone that grew up with The Muppets at Disney World but not The Muppet Show in particular, this felt like a well crafted SNL episode with host Kermit the Frog and special guest Sabrina Carpenter.

If you go into The Muppet Show with a favorite Muppet in mind, you’ll come out of it most likely satisfied with seeing them in this 30 minute special, as there are SO many characters crammed into a half hour. A personal favorite of mine being Beaker who has his own segment in typical fashion with Dr. Honeydew. As with every appearance of The Muppets, the technical aspect is just outstanding and the puppetry remains an impossible triumph with how much work goes into the practicality of The Muppet Show.

With the creative team of Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen producing, this feels like the classic Muppets that isn’t afraid to tack on a few glimpses of humor that levitate toward mature. Unlike Looney Tunes, the humor is still intact and the voice acting is impeccable, still sounding like the classic characters I grew with. It’s self aware, weird and just the right amount of dumb.

With some very comical and on brand musical performances from Sabrina Carpenter and supporting Muppets, we are witness to a mix of classic, new and popular songs. Filmed in front of a studio audience full of humans and Muppets, it adds an extra element that makes the show feel more genuine and raw, even though it’s clearly not in any way.

While it’s not perfect and Kermit himself even admits that near the close, it’s overflowing with nostalgic charm and love for the fans. I won’t be discussing specific segments or songs as it’ll spoil the incredible experience as the curtain rises and the show begins. It’s a blast all the way though and it’s an experience that will be difficult not to come out of it smiling from ear to ear.
