OUR MOVIE REVIEW:

“Go to London, get your man”

When I was sent the trailer for Prime Video’s new romantic comedy Red, White, & Royal Blue, some of the most iconic (to me) films popped into my head: Chasing Liberty, My Date With the President’s Daughter, What a Girl Wants, A Christmas Prince, First Daughter. What do they all have in common? The child of a high political figure, whether its a president, a prime minister, or the royal family, is falling in love with someone they weren’t expected to. In this new comedy, the son of the U.S. president and a British royal prince fall in love.

Prince Henry of Britain (Nicholas Galitzine) and First Son Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez) meet at a royal event at the palace and both express disdain for one another, what is suggested to be a rocky past. After a bout of tomfoolery at the event, their feud flares, leading their teams to force a makeup press stunt after their antics went public. From there the two begin texting and calling regularly, forming feelings for one another, thus kicking off the romantic comedy formula.

I was really into the film’s overall ridiculousness, not taking itself too seriously. It’s got a ton of charm, and some witty dialogue. It’s not perfect by any means, but it doesn’t set out to be. The only time I was really taken out of the movie was during a party scene that feels like an Android cell phone commercial, accompanied by the most unrealistic line delivery on the planet. To suggest a royal Prince that exists in the year 2023 would not know Lil Jon’s "Get Low" and then snobbishly scoff at the lyrics. People who are born into royalty are shaking their ass at the club just like the rest of us, believe me.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the chemistry between Henry and Alex. I believed they loved each other from the first moment they locked eyes. And the film didn’t do any fancy editing to make us see, it was just there from the actors. I also really enjoyed the beginning credit sequence that felt very early aughts. I also really loved Uma Thurman’s performance as the U.S. President with her little southern drawl.

If you’re in the mood for a fresh take on a fun rom-com, Red, White & Royal Blue is now available on Prime Video!
