OUR MOVIE REVIEW:

The Last Voyage of the Demeter brings a breath of fresh, sea-salty air in its visually striking adaptation of the ‘Captain’s Log’ chapter from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, “Dracula.” The film’s impressive special effects, thoughtful set design, skillful cinematography and creative direction successfully elevate the movie, creating an engrossing claustrophobic experience filled with chilling thrills.

Visionary filmmaker André Øvredal brings new light to a dark and grisly tale of survival on a sea journey embarked on by a tight knit crew and some outsider newbie shipmates, who quickly step up as leaders and earn their sea legs as they have to work together as a team to survive a mysterious, devilish beast slaying the Demeter’s crew mercilessly one-by-one in grisly, blood spurting fashion.

The talented ensemble cast is strong and brings a desperate humanity to their performances. Highlights include Corey Hawkins as a Cambridge educated doctor, who quickly becomes a reasoned and natural leader on the ship that manages to keep himself together as chaos unfolds all over. Liam Cunningham portrays the ship’s long tenured captain and David Dastmalchian plays his chosen successor. They both bring a natural chemistry and unspoken respect for one another in their shared history of living and working together aboard the Demeter.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter delivers as a visually dazzling adaptation of an over century old novel, supported wholeheartedly by a cast and crew that bring a refreshing atmosphere and eerie ambience to this excerpt from the infamous tale of Dracula.
