OUR DOCUMENTARY REVIEW:
As a newly emerging fan of WWE, this five episode miniseries is a wonderful highlight reel of all I’ve missed from the biggest 2025 events thus far in the sport. It also does a wonderful job of showcasing the behind the scenes technical side of things, although it would be great to have an entire season in the writers room but it’s understandable that some things are truly on the fly even with a core storyline. If I’ve learned anything in my minimal time with WWE, it’s that there are an abundance of subplots.
In charge of the direction of the WWE, Triple H is the Chief Content Officer and throughout the series we witness him encourage his wrestlers and plan out their fates. For the first two episodes, the story is heavy on Cody Rhodes, John Cena, Rhea Ripley, Jey Uso and CM Punk and then spins off into wrestlers I’m a little less aware of but looking forward to exploring in the future.
John Cena and The Rock are two of the biggest names of note that a common person would link to the world of wrestling. We get quite a good chunk of Cena in the first two episodes with a glimpse of The Rock. Luckily going into episode four, we begin to focus on the return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and seeing just how grand a return like this, along with Cena’s retirement announcement, has to be to gain steam amongst fans in the WWE community.
The drama of a babyface (a good guy) turning into a heel (a bad guy) and the art of surprise in the writer’s room is a magical element of this form of entertainment. Violence and theatrics at their finest. A series filled with championships, a Royal Rumble and the Elimination Chamber - accompanied by the chaos of returning icons in a seismic WWE event. The coordination of Cena’s turn is an immersive process as we witness Triple H guide us through the decision making process for this specific scenario.
It’s fun when the creative team goes into high gear and has to make decisions, as well as changes to the storyline on the fly when injuries occur. As someone not incredibly familiar with the world of WWE, learning as the episodes roll through is a great experience and gets me hyped to watch more. More dedicated fans… I’m unsure if there is enough behind the scenes input to make this seem like much more than a dedicated highlight reel from this year. Nevertheless, WWE: UNREAL is an addictive limited series that is easy to fully invest in, especially for someone that isn’t quite in the know of the happenings of the past.
