The Verdict: A Must-See

Nowadays, you can depend on director Guy Ritchie to just roll out of bed and make a movie. Not only counting the television shows he's helped run, Young Sherlock and Mob Land, Richie has also released a film each consecutive year this decade, with no signs of stopping. Here, he brings us a breezy caper about a covert operatives team taking revenge on a billionaire mogul who has made their lives a living hell. Starring Eiza Gonzalez, Henry Cavill, and Jake Gyllenhaal, In the Grey, at its very least, is a total charm fest with any of these three actors being able to make you swoon with the smallest of smirks.
In the Grey honestly, doesn't really have that many issues. Being Richie's shortest film since 2002's Swept Away, it goes by fast, but one can't help that it perhaps is too complicated for its own good. For a film that I could only possibly dub “Ocean's 11 for Meatheads”, it weirdly has a lot of moving parts. The setup is simple, but the trek is painfully elaborate, and to what end? There's more emotional complexity here than in any of the characters; their motivations are pretty simple and to the point. The title implies their moral philosophy, but the film even scoffs at the idea of interrogating it. All this is good and fine, if only the film afforded to take its time. As inoffensive as it is, this is a really fun film with a lot of great moments. Though it's hard not to be bewildered by its structure.
By the film's end, it's hard to really feel annoyed about anything about In the Grey. Even if you don't get much from it, the three main stars bring enough charm to keep you entertained for the time being. Perhaps it's shallow, but it never pretends to be deep; it's fast and messy with no room to contemplate, however, you're getting something totally fun, rad, and in your face. To tell you the truth, there are worse ways to spend 90 minutes.
