The Verdict: A Must-See

Kids, don’t do drugs. Especially drugs you find that have mysteriously fallen from your dorm room’s ceiling. Pizza Movie (just a placeholder) is quite literally the most insane comedy I’ve seen in years, and you’ve got to applaud the creative team behind it for going weird with it.
Straight off a Stranger Things high, Gaten Matarazzo shares the screen with The Goldbergs lead Sean Giambrone, and their comedic timing is beyond stellar. Assisted by a bizarre and at times risky script, their chemistry truly feels astonishingly genuine, and their estranged relationship with Lulu Wilson’s Lizzy feels similar. They’re troubled, they’re high, and they need a bite of saucy pizza to survive.
From farts to the face, chainsaws to the rear, robots seeking satisfaction, talking butterflies, and a long trip downstairs for a slice of pie — this is a tale as old as time — a bad trip equates to secured doom. Oh, and did I mention the entire dorm is being searched by a clan of power-hungry RAs who are on the hunt to eliminate delinquents from their campus once and for all.
It’s a film about acceptance, moving forward, and embracing the weird reality of who you are in this world. As with any stoner comedy, this might not be your style of humor — but it is the right amount of stupidly clever for me to love every single second. It had me bursting at the seams at times and down for the emotional turmoil at others, with six stages on this trip, things can get wild quickly. It doesn’t ease you into the comedy, instead showcasing what’s ahead in a matter of minutes. If by the time the title card appears you haven’t cracked a smile… it might be time to abort. But for those that stick with it, Pizza Movie is certain to be one of the more delicious experiences you’ll find streaming at home.
