"Bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigate the underworld when they return to Tatooine to claim Jabba the Hutt's old turf."
I'm going to be completely honest. I never LOVED Boba Fett as a character. Mainly because I've never really read any of the expanded universe Star Wars stuff and he's barely in the original trilogy. Don't get me wrong, he's a cool visual but that's about it for me. After watching the first 2 episodes of The Book of Boba Fett, I'm WAY more invested in his character and story.
The first 2 episodes of the 7 episode series do a great job of balancing two different Boba-centric stories. The first takes place right after The Mandalorian season 2 and follows Boba Fett and his loyal ally Fennec Shand as they take Jabba The Hutt's throne and continue his reign while the second story is shown through flashbacks as it follows Boba post escaping the Sarlacc Pitt and joining a band of Tusken Raiders. The two episodes focus mainly on the flashback storyline which focuses on Boba's switch from Bounty Hunter to Leader which I found to be the best part of the 2 episodes. The main story following Jabba's reign isn't as fleshed out yet but the build-up so far has been interesting and smartly paced.
The acting is solid all across the board, but major kudos goes to Temuera Morrison who plays Boba Fett; he manages to give Boba some true character by injecting some humor into the character, making him vulnerable but not sacrificing his imposing nature. I actually felt for him quite a bit and wanted him to succeed. I also really enjoyed the little moments he has with the Tusken Raiders and I really appreciate that they're humanizing the raiders more and more in these shows besides just making them look like savages all the time.
The special effects are solid considering it's still a Disney+ show so don't expect the quality that you get from the movies, but the practical creatures, effects, and makeup are all top-notch as you'd expect from a Star Wars project. Honestly, this show might have some of my favorite looking creatures and droids from any Star Wars thing so far. There's a Wookie that shows up in the 2nd episode that might be the coolest looking character in all of Star Wars. That being said, extended lore fans are going to be very pleased with some of the additions to The Book of Boba Fett as well.
The only problem I have is some of the action scenes being kind of basic and unimpressive. There's a scene involving a train in episode 2 that was fun but most of the other action has a stiffness to it. A lot of the fighting is slow and awkward which might have to do with Morrison being a lot older now so his Boba can't quite move as fast as he once did. I actually like the idea of an older Bounty Hunter that isn't at the top of his game but can still kick ass but that's not what the show is portraying him as so far so it feels awkward whenever there's a hand to hand fight scene.
Overall, I've really enjoyed the first 2 episodes of The Book of Boba Fett and I'm super excited for more. It's a slow burn but it has a Space Western feel to it like previous Star Wars films used to have and I love that stuff so it never bothered me. Can't wait for more! I'm finally a fan of Boba Fett. Feels good.
